Icebreaker Oden cruise: Arctic Ocean 2018 (AO2018)

Departing from Longyearbyen, the icebreaker Oden will do a quick transit north from Fram Strait into the pack ice, looking for a nice and large multiyear ice floe on which to build an experimental camp. We will then drift with this ice floe for a bout five weeks. During that time ACAS will take detailed observations from the surface through the troposphere, especially targeting the surface energy balance and the vertical structure of the lower troposphere including clouds.

The core of ACAS funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, and co-funded by INTAROS; ACAS is a YOPP-endorsed project. Collaborators from Leeds University (UK) have similar goals as ACAS and are funded by NERC. Stockholm University are funded by the Swedish Research council to examine sources of aerosols. Other participants are looking at the upper ocean and sea ice biology and chemistry, and are funded by NSF

Lead ACAS PI is Prof. Michael Tjernström; several other projects will share the icebreaker, some of which have overlapping targets. ACAS investigators are Michael Tjernström and John Prytherch from Stockholm University in collaboration with Prof. Ian Brooks and his group from University of Leeds.
