Field campaign in Sodankylä

The campaign will take place at the FMI Sodankylä supersite (67.367 °N, 26.629 °E) from 18 March to 12 April. The goal of the campaign is to collect very comprehensive, simultaneous measurements on snow microphysics and optical and microwave radiative characteristics to develop and validate a unified model for snow-electromagnetic interaction in the optical and microwave regions. The model will be then applied to retrieve snow properties (snow albedo, snow melt on/off, etc.) from combinations of optical and microwave signals measured from satellites. Two key instruments in the campaign are the polarimetric radar system and the SVC spectro albedometer partly developed in the INTAROS Task 3.5. The campaign is highly international, with participants from Japan, China, France, Switzerland and Italy, in addition to Finnish participants from several FMI units and from the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute.

The campaign is funded partly by the Academy of Finland project SnowAPP (Modelling of the Snow microphysical-radiative interaction and its APPlications) and partly by INTAROS (Task 3.5).
